My Homemade Broth in 3 Easy Steps

If you have never tried making your own homemade broth, you absolutely should.

It is super easy, customizable, economical and way healthier. Here are my 3 quick steps to making your own broth.

1. Toss all ingredients in a large pot and boil

So, here are list of ingredients, I typically use. Just take out the largest pot you’ve got and toss the ingredients in, one after another. You can totally adapt depending on what you have at hand.

  • Main contributor: you can use either
    • Chicken bones (you can use raw bones or leftover carcass from baked or rotisserie chicken)
    • Beef bones
    • Lamb bones
    • Leftover ham bone
    • Or skip the bones altogether and just use vegetables like carrots, celery, broccoli / cauliflower stalk. Basically any vegetable that will not get mushy is fine.
  • For the aromatics, I like to toss in some of the following, but feel free to skip them:
    • Garlic cloves
    • Ginger pieces
    • Cumin seeds
  • Other flavor enhancers like:
    • Whole peppercorns
    • Bay leaf
  • If you did not already use vegetables for your main contributor, you can still throw in some:
    • Broccoli stalk
    • Celery leaves
    • Green onion tops
    • Carrots
    • Any other hard vegetables
  • Finally, you fill up the pot as much as you can with water to cover all the ingredients you have and plus some.

Let it boil and then simmer for a while…i usually give it at least 15-20 minutes. But frankly sometimes, I just forget I have this simmering while I tend to other tasks.

2. Let it cool and strain

When the simmering process is done and it looks like you have a good looking broth, just remove from heat and let it cool. Then take out any ingredients that are still in large chunks and easy to pull out using some tongs.

Here is what the broth looked in during one the time I made using leftover chicken bones.

Strain the rest of them out using your strainer into a jar or a big container of your choice. I like to use mason jars.

3. Use or store

Finally, all that is left to do is to enjoy the wonderful broth. I usually do not add the salt in the cooking process so that I can add salt to taste while I use them.

If you cannot use all the broth at once, it freezes pretty well for future use.

So, there you have it folks…you’re very own quick and easy broth making use of ingredients that were put to one final good use.
