Life happens. I don’t have a chance to always stay on top of my household cleaning like I should. Wait. Who am I kidding? I almost never stay on top of things…especially when I comes to deep cleaning my bathroom shower.
Need proof? This was the state of our stand-in shower couple of weeks ago:

Yep. Disgusting, I know.
So, I decided it was time to tackle this unpleasant chore. But I tried a trick I had recently come across online and it made the job so much easier. I just have to share it now.
Secret ingredient = Toilet bowl cleaner.
And cleaning was done in 3 easy steps!
Step 1: Apply the Toilet Bowl Cleaner
First I applied the cleaner on the surface in a zig zag motion going from top to bottom. It wasn’t necessary to cover every square inch…we’ll take care of it in the next step. I did the same thing on the tile areas with built up water scum as well.

Step 2: Spread it All Over and Let Sit Few Minutes
Now it is time to fill in the gaps. I just used an old body scrub brush I had and went over the surface area in circular motions. No need to apply any pressure. Simple spread the gel cleaner around. Just like this…

Step 3: Rinse Off
After the cleaner has been sitting around for a few minutes, all you need to do is rinse it off thoroughly. I think I just cleaned our bathroom counters while letting it soak. Thankfully we have a hand held shower head that I was able to use to hose down and get to every nook and cranny of the sliding glass doors and also the shower tiles inside.
And, that’s it folks. So simple. You can see the side by side comparison below for yourself.

You will notice that the glass isn’t completely squeaky clean in my after picture but trust me, it took off at least 98% of the water scum. I am sure, one more application would have got it squeaky clean…maybe I’ll do that next week 😉
A couple of other tips:
- I did not wear a mask but in hindsight, I probably should have. By the time I was done, the fumes were pretty strong and getting to me.
- Plan to do this just before you need to take a shower. This way you do not have to worry about trying to stay dry while rinsing off the cleaner and can enjoy your shower in clean surroundings.
- When you use your toilet bowl cleaner for also cleaning your showers, you will run out of your cleaner much faster than you’re used to. So shop accordingly. I tend to buy them in packs of 4 at Costco and in fact just picked up another pack yesterday since they are included in the October warehouse savings.
Well, that’s it folks. Hope you found this helpful.
Happy cleaning!
