One of our family favorites on the menu is Tofu. We like them baked, fried, sauteed, scrambled and cooked in sauces. We like to them cook them by itself or mixed in with other dishes. So whenever I am making the tofu, I’d like to be very efficient in how I prep them.
So today I am going to share a quick tip on how to cut up tofu using a minimalistic approach that that does not dirty any dishes except for the knife I use for cutting.
Here we go:
Open and Drain
The first thing you want to do is is of course open up the little container the tofu comes in, take out the tofu and drain all the extra liquid.

If I am using the soft tofu then draining is all I need to do. If I am using firm or extra firm tofu then, I usually freeze and thaw them before using them. So in addition to draining the liquid, I give it a few good squeezes like a sponge to drain the extra liquid off of them.
The Horizontal Slice
Next I stand up the tofu vertically within the same tofu container and slice it on the narrow edge. Just like this.

The Container Slices
Now that the first slice has been done, I put the tofu back in the container just the way it came. And then while the tofu in there, slice them into bite size pieces or the size you will use them for your dish.

The Optional Marinade
If the recipe calls for a marinade then instead of using another container to soak the tofu in, I usually just pour the marinade into the tofu container all over the tofu and store it there until it is ready for use.
And there you have you folks…you just learned my secret to prepping your tofu without getting your cutting board or other plates dirty.
